Homemade Chai

Homemade 1, Starbucks 0. Well played, homemade. Well played.

 

  • 1/2 cinnamon stick
  • 4 green cardamom pods
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 T ginger root, grated
  • 4 whole black peppercorns
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 single serve black tea bags or 1 tablespoon loose black tea
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, honey or maple syrup

Put all ingredients except black tea and sweetener into a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cover, and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Bring to a boil again, remove from heat and add tea. Cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Strain through sieve, and put liquid back into the pot. Stir in brown sugar, honey or maple syrup and milk or soy milk on low for a minute or so. Serves 2, or if you are me, 1.

For something different, try it with green tea.
